What is a Larp without Hypocras?

Recipe Hypocras, mead and Knight's Lemonade

Hypocras (also called hipocras, hippocras or "mulled wine") is an herbal wine that is fine to drink cold and possibly hot.

Because in the Middle Ages the quality of wine was usually not very good, it was flavored using spices and honey. Hypocras is somewhat similar in taste to "mulled wine" because of the cinnamon, but the comparison ends there.

Of course, besides mead and beer, Hypocras cannot be missing from a Larp!

Recipe hypocras

During the Larp Fantasy Heroes you run the risk of encountering agnomeWho wants to share this drink with you. Should you want to make your own hypocras, you can. The recipe is simple:

  • 1 bottle
    • cheap, heavy red wine, such as a Bordeaux, South African or Spanish Navarra or
    • cheap, firm dry white wine or
    • cheap alcohol-free red wine (for a non-alcoholic version)
  • 6 cloves
  • 6 green cardamom seeds
  • 20 grams of cinnamon sticks
  • 40 grams of finely chopped ginger balls or baking ginger
  • 80 grams of cane sugar
  • a few drops of rose essence

Put everything in a glass decanter and mix until the cane sugar is roughly dissolved. Cover the decanter with aluminum foil. Stir this mixture every day. Let this steep for 2 to 3 days. Place a clean cloth handkerchief in a sieve, funnel or colander and pour the Hypocras through this. Store in an airtight bottle.

Drink tastefully and enjoy in moderation!

Mede/Honingwijn

Another typical drink drunk at Larps (besides beer) is mead. Mead is fermented honey. Making your own is one thing, especially delicious mead because quite a bit can go wrong in the process. You also have to have a lot of patience (up to a year of patience). Hence, leave mead to the specialists.

Knight's Lemonade

Take an empty glass or stone bottle with a clasp closure. Squeeze half a lime and put the juice in the bottle. Top up with honey to taste. A squeeze bottle of honey works easiest in this case. Fill the bottle one-fifth full with warm water. Close the bottle and shake just until the honey is dissolved. Top up with cold water and refrigerate again if necessary.

Drink tastefully and enjoy with your mates!
